Railway zones

For administrative purposes, Indian Railways is divided into seventeen zones.

01. Northern Railway (NR); Date Established: April 14, 1952; Headquarters: Delhi; Divisions: Delhi, Ambala, Firozpur, Lucknow, Moradabad

02. North Eastern Railway (NER); Date Established: April 14, 1952; Headquarters: Gorakhpur; Divisions: Izzatnagar, Lucknow, Varanasi

03. Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR); Date Established: 1958; Headquarters: Guwahati; Divisions: Alipurduar, Katihar, Lumding, Rangia, Tinsukia

04. Eastern Railway (ER); Date Established: April, 1952; Headquarters: Kolkata; Divisions: Howrah, Sealdah, Asansol, Malda

05. South Eastern Railway (SER); Date Established: 1955; Headquarters: Kolkata; Divisions: Adra, Chakradharpur, Kharagpur, Ranchi


06. South Central Railway (SCR); Date Established: October 2, 1966; Headquarters: Secunderabad; Divisions: Secunderabad, Hyderabad, Guntakal, Guntur, Nanded, Vijayawada


07. Southern Railway (SR); Date Established: April 14, 1951; Headquarters: Chennai; Divisions: Chennai, Madurai, Palakkad, Salem, Tiruchchirapalli, Thiruvanathapuram


08. Central Railway (CR); Date Established: November 5, 1951; Headquarters: Mumbai; Divisions: Mumbai, Bhusawal, Pune, Solapur, Nagpur


09. Western Railway (WR); Date Established: November 5, 1951; Headquarters: Mumbai; Divisions: Mumbai Central, Baroda, Ratlam, Ahmedabad, Rajkot, Bhavnagar


10. South Western Railway (SWR); Date Established: April 1, 2003; Headquarters: Hubli; Divisions: Hubli, Bangalore, Mysore


11. North Western Railway (NWR); Date Established: October 1, 2002; Headquarters: Jaipur; Divisions: Jaipur, Ajmer, Bikaner, Jodhpur


12. West Central Railway (WCR); Date Established: April 1, 2003; Headquarters: Jabalpur; Divisions: Jabalpur, Bhopal, Kota


13. North Central Railway (NCR); Date Established: April 1, 2003; Headquarters: Allahabad; Divisions: Allahabad, Agra, Jhansi


14. South East Central Railway (SECR); Date Established: April 1, 2003; Headquarters: Bilaspur, CG; Divisions: Bilaspur, Raipur, Nagpur


15. East Coast Railway (ECoR); Date Established: April 1, 2003; Headquarters: Bhubaneswar; Divisions: Khurda Road, Sambalpur, Visakhapatnam


16. East Central Railway (ECR); Date Established: October 1, 2002; Headquarters: Hajipur; Divisions: Danapur, Dhanbad, Mughalsarai, Samastipur, Sonpur


17. Konkan Railway (KR); Date Established: July 19, 1990; Headquarters: Navi Mumbai; Divisions: Karwar, Ratnagiri


18. Kashmir Railway (KR); Date Established: July 19, 1990; Headquarters: Srinagar; Divisions: Anantnag, Srinagar, Budgam, Udhampur


The Calcutta Metro is owned and operated by Indian Railways, but is not a part of any of the zones. It is administratively considered to have the status of a zonal railway. Each zonal railway is made up of a certain number of divisions, each having a divisional headquarters. There are a total of sixty-seven divisions.
